Lochristi International Sculpture Symposium Flanders
For wood and chatarra (metal scrap)
The municipality of Lochristi and the Council for Culture, AIESM agent for Belgium Thierry Lauwers are inviting foreign artists, sculptors for a monumental work to be realized in the centre of town in the presence of a large public interest.
This from Friday 27 April (Arrival and Opening Ceremony) until Monday 7 May (Departure) 2012.
The material is wood and chatarra (metal scrap). The use of motor chainsaw is prohibited, only electric chainsaw will be allowed due to proximity of the houses. The use of grinders and other electric power machines are allowed. The sculptors will bring their own tools. Electric 230 V 16 Amp and compressor for cleaning tools will be on the working site. Check your electric connection on internet for compatibility. Chatarra artists will have welding equipment and electrode at their disposal. The material will be collected at a recycling firm for metal the first day.
Wood height 2.30 meter x diameter 50 cm, chatarra height 2 meter.
Working hours are from 08.30 hr until 13.00 hr and from 14.30 hr until 18.00 Hr. The artist is to be on the site during these hours. Working later is allowed, earlier not. Refreshments on the site, each artist will receive tickets for consummations daily.
Free day and excursion to Ghent, the Museum of Contempory Arts (SMAK) and the Museum of Fine Arts are on Wednesday 2 May.
Visit of the local Museum for Florists and the greenhouses one afternoon.
At the same time the Municipality is organizing “Kunst Omdat het Moet”, (Art because we must), this means, exposition, music and performance in the evenings. We will join in evenings after supper. Also come and meet in the nearby café. The exposition is for local artists only. You can sell small work if you want on the site only. If you do please to use certificate.
The work will be done in all weather conditions. A cover for rain and sun will be on the place for each artist in the form of party tent 3 x 3 meter.
Artists need their own personal medical insurance, and Third Party Insurance.
The application language is English.
A fee of 500 Euro will be paid for every sculptor who realized his work in time and in accordance to his proposal.
Tickets will be refunded 200 Euro for residents in Europe and Turkey. Up to 500 Euro for the rest of the world.
There is no specific theme for this event. Only the Jury will be composed from a broad cultural base, and Lochristi is world-famous for his flowers especially azalea and begonia. Figurative art is I suppose the best guide. Nobody will stop you to try in non figurative of course. It’s just a tip.

Please to fill in Application form and send it together your drawings, curriculum vitae, explanation, photo’s of older monumental work to both (!)E-mail addresses. (No more than 5 MB in total). Chatarra artists are to send the old drawings and results.
Additional material such as paint, varnish, metal and so on can be used. This extra must be specified in the explanation. The organisators will buy such in advance so the specification must be exact in liters, kilo’s …

Selected sculptors (sculptresses) flying to Brussels Airport will come to Lochristi by bus from travelling firm, coming by train to Gent - Sint-Pieterstation will have a lift.
Accommodation and food in hotel. Lunch on the site (probably).
Program will be made later.
Rooms per two! If possible and our finances allow us; single per room. But you better don’t count on that. I prefer you have good time in my country, quality time so that you make good sculpture. Sleeping you can do at home, and we socialize a lot so better be fresh when you arrive. This is Flanders.
My friends, future friends and colleagues I am not in the selection committee. The only thing I do is control the feasibility before it goes to there. So if some problems appear I will contact you.
